Repairing paths along the Glen

There has been some need for some time to make access easy and safe along the Glen – whether it’s filling in potholes or fixing trip hazards or generally seeing to the infrastructure along the Glen.

As said at the end of the year 2024:

“Since their inception, the Friends of Glen Goyle have been very keen to make this lovely corner of Sidmouth as accessible as possible to all. Indeed, we would all like to be able to walk through the Glen without worrying about tripping over or obstacles such as steep gradients or steps.”

And so earlier today on their regular Thursday morning session, volunteers from the FOGG working party met up at the Glen to do some fixing.

District Council horticultural officer Paul Fealey had secured several loads of aggregate and some railway sleepers to make a particularly tricky part of the path more secure.

And together with the FOGG volunteers, town councillor Paul Dodds and district councillor Ian Barlow, Paul set to work and very soon they were able to transform the section of the path into a totally different look – smooth and easy to walk along, with now little fear of tripping over the myriad of roots.

The set of photos below were taken by FOGG member Thomas Hasler, one of the working party navvies, who captured the progress and the mood of the morning’s work:

With huge thanks to the district and town councils for their support – both financial and physical(!) – and of course to the FOGG team for all their efforts.

We can now all really enjoy our walks down the Glen.
