ASHERTON HOUSE AND ASHERTON GARDENS

What used to lie just to the north of the Glen Goyle park was a fine suburban house:

Asherton House – Friends of Glen Goyle

This was the property and dwelling of one of Sidmouth’s doctors:

Asherton House: Dr Bertram Cohen – Friends of Glen Goyle

And during the 1950s and 60s, his grandchildren would visit:

Asherton House: memories of holidays in Sidmouth – Friends of Glen Goyle

Here are further memories from those grandchildren, brother and sister David and Pat Bassett – focussing on the gardens to Asherton House, which today make up the area around the ‘lawn’ to the north.

Here are David’s notes to the photographs and plans:

As I noted previously, my sister Gillian Barnes recently found our Uncle’s (Arthur Gainsford) complete 35mm colour slide collection. We have been able to sort out some photos of Asherton House and Gardens that we think might be of interest. I have been able to scan and successfully renovate (Photoshop!) most of the slides.

I have added some text that should help with the map to get a fuller picture of Asherton House and Gardens. I have included a collage of recent photographs highlighting some of the places in the garden where we played as children. I have also included a collage of photos taken by our Uncle just before our Aunt Ruth’s wedding, that was the last time we were all at Asherton before it was sold and knocked down. Regrettable, I do not have accurate dates for these slides, but the stunning azaleas indicate springtime.
