Making progress along the Glen

A very productive morning was had with the District Council’s Streetscene tree officer and his team down Glen Goyle this week – looking at some clearing and some planting, and the consequent production onsite of lots of useful chippings.

Members of the FOGG working party also discussed with the team the putting up of bird boxes – especially with a view to encouraging owls across the Glen. In parallel, the tree officer has also met up with volunteers from the Cherishing Sidmouth Cemeteries working party to organise bird boxes – so there should be synergies happening there.

And here are the FOGG volunteers enjoying the sun during their morning’s work:

The grass looks a little sad, it being that season, but this time last year a lot of work went into opening up the Glen Goyle lawn which exposed a lot of not-very-green areas.

Fortunately, in another very productive session earlier in the month, the District Council’s horticultural officer Paul Fealey had talked through several points with the FOGG volunteers – including sowing grass seed on the rather sorry looking lawn and creating a ‘fluffy edge’ to that area, possibly with clover.

They also discussed making access easy and safe along the Glen, putting together job sheets/work schedules for the volunteers, and having regular onsite meetings with Streetscene officers every six weeks.

All of which promises further good progress over the coming weeks as the Glen emerges into spring!
